Closed with an elegant wax capsule, the Arnaldo Caprai 2012 Montefalco Sagrantino Spinning Beauty is released 10 years after the harvest. I tasted this wine a couple of times, including at dinner, and I very much admire its beautiful color, concentration and elegant aromas. The tannins are strong, especially in 2012 that saw very hot and dry conditions. It's a very big wine with opulent layers that cover the entire palate from front to back. It sees 24 months in oak, and only 1,000 bottles were produced. The wine is drinking beautifully now, but I shortened the drinking window for this vintage when compared to some of the previous releases.

Wow. The incredible packaging here (with a gold thread around the bottle and a white wax capsule to close) gives you a sense of the importance of this beautiful Sagrantino. I tasted bottle number 567 of only 1,133 made. The 2010 Montefalco Sagrantino Spinning Beauty is very nicely balanced, showing so much care and focus. Dark fruit, leather, tar and baking spice make up the bouquet, while the tannins are softly integrated—and that's the key takeaway here. You get lots of big bold power on the close. You really need a serious steak dinner for this wine.

I tasted bottle 562 of only 999 made. The 2008 Montefalco Sagrantino Spinning Beauty is one of the most complete and ambitious expressions of the Sagrantino grape I have yet to taste. Paying homage to the Caprai family background in Umbrian cashmere and textiles, Spinning Beauty is indeed an elaborate embroidery of flavors and complex aromas. There are some tertiary tones here of licorice, smoke and campfire ash, but the wine's primary fruit is intact with dried blackberry and sweet plum. Perhaps the wine's spice component—with clove, nutmeg and saffron—is the most difficult to pin down and describe. There is a lot to contemplate and admire here.

There's a lot to say here, so hold onto your horses. The 2007 Montefalco Sagrantino Spinning Beauty plays homage to the cashmere and textile background that brought success and prestige to the Caprai family (and continues to do so). This pure expression of Sagrantino is made in extremely limited quantity. Some 900 bottles were produced in this vintage. To me, the wine is almost Baroque in character, with so many over-the-top aromatic embellishments it's almost hard to know where to direct your attention. This fullness and overt generosity comes into stark contrast with the famously spartan, humble and inward-looking personality of Umbria. This wine definitely stands apart among its peers (of which there are few). Candid cherry, bitter chocolate, cinnamon, black currant, toasted vanilla, barbecue smoke and Christmas spice rise to the top. The wine is almost chewy in terms of density, and there's an obvious point of sweetness among all that densely extracted fruit.
