The Tempranillo 2013 Spiga has a lot of oak and plenty of cereal and mealy notes. The palate reveals very abundant tannins that seem to be winning the battle against the fruit, which seems to be drying out. Drink up.

The 2012 Spiga is produced with ripe Tempranillo grapes from their estate vineyards that were fermented in a mixture of stainless steel (80%) and oak vats, and matured in French and Centro-European (15%) oak barrels for one year before bottling. 2012 was a ripe vintage and the wine achieved 15% alcohol, yet it doesn't feel overripe. It was a healthy vintage and time in tank has provided good harmony. The palate is medium to full-bodied with fine-grained tannins, with balance and all the components to develop nicely in bottle. This feels young and undeveloped, ready for a long life ahead, but enjoyable now. 35,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in June 2016.

The 2011 Spiga, pure Tempranillo fermented in a mixture of stainless steel (60%) and oak vats, was raised in oak barrels for one year before bottling. 2011 was a normal vintage, and the nose shows some freshness (orange peel) and red berries with a touch of spices. The grapes are selected from the stonier soils; the estate is a big, open meander of the Duero River and you see the variability of soils; in some parts, the rolling stones cover the soil and those vines have earlier ripening and lower yields. The palate is soft with fine-grained tannins and good acidity, showing good balance. They aim for elegance and in 2011 they certainly got it. 30,000 bottles were produced in 2011.
