Pretty orange blossom with cranberry and crab apple aromas as well as watermelon. Medium body with fine and polished tannins that shows energy and length. Very fine-textured at the end. Drink now or hold.

The Planeta 2019 Etna Rosso is primary and less formal overall but still very true to the classic fundamentals of an Etna red. The bouquet is immediate in its delivery of wild rose, cassis and dried raspberry. It's no surprise that those distinctive volcanic tones of dry ash and earth also play a leading role. This Rosso is lean and streamlined with nice freshness to conclude. Serve it with a classic Sicilian pasta alla Norma (tomato, eggplant and ricotta salata). Some 53,000 bottles were made.

Sporting one of my all-time favorite labels in Italian wine (with an etching of an exploding Etna), the 2018 Etna Rosso is a mid-weight red with smoky and tarry aromas that intermingle with red fruit, cassis and toasted almond. You also get blue flower and wild rose, but of course, those volcanic signatures are what gives this wine its compelling raison d'être.

The Planeta 2016 Etna Rosso opens to a lean, streamlined appearance with brilliant ruby and garnet hues that shine bright from deep inside this attractive wine. The brightness of those ruby hues is noteworthy, as many Etna reds show pale color stability in comparison. This wine opens to a mild, almost fragile bouquet with finely-tuned aromas of wild berry, red currant, smoke and ash. The folks at Planeta have opted for an understated expression of Nerello Mascalese, and this suits the grape very nicely. I would propose this Etna Rosso for near or medium-term drinking.

Planeta is expanding its offering of Etna wines and this base red is part of that effort. The 2015 Etna Rosso is a subtle and easygoing wine that offers a quick and informal alternative to the large majority of Nerello Mascalese-based wines that tend to be much more austere and reticent in character. This wine reads like an open book. It flaunts its primary fruit, its fresh acidity and its firm but not astringent mouthfeel. Drink this Etna Rosso with barbecued meats.
