It is time for consumers to wake up and realize that the Loire Valley's micro appellation of Savennieres produces the world's greatest expressions of dry Chenin Blanc. In some vintages these wines possess a Montrachet-like texture and richness. Recent vintages have included a tough year in 1991, an average year in 1992, a very good year in 1993, and a potentially very good year in 1994. 1990, followed closely by 1989 are the two most recent great vintages.The outstanding 1993 Savennieres displays a classy, floral, mineral, and tropical fruit-scented nose, exemplary balance, superb ripeness, medium to full body, and a cherry-like flavor component. It is a dry, forceful, rich yet elegant, impressively-constituted Chenin Blanc that should drink well for 12-15 years.Chateau d'Epire is one of the best known Savennieres producers.
