    The pure Syrah 2017 La Meseta comes from a single vineyard. It has 13.5% alcohol and was produced with a soft hand in the extraction, but there's generous oak that gives it a creamy and spicy personality that kind of hides the varietal character. The palate reveals fine-grained, abundant and slightly dusty tannins. 5,000 bottles were filled after eight months in second use 300-liter French oak barrels.

    The 2016 La Meseta is a single-vineyard Syrah that followed their usual method: fermentation in stainless steel, malolactic in concrete and then an élevage in new barriques for eight months. Here, the nose is not much about the variety; it feels more Mediterranean, with aromas of dry herbs and esparto grass, than the previous vintage I tasted, which was the 2014, when it turned into a varietal Syrah, as it used to be a 50/50 blend with Cencibel. There is concentration here and tasty flavors with some grainy tannins. 8,000 bottles were filled in September 2018.

    The 2014 La Meseta is a 50/50 blend of Cencibel and Syrah from limestone soils fermented separately in stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and then matured in new French barriques for eight months. It felt riper than the other reds, with notes of plums and black fruit, dusty tannins and a slightly bitter finish. This is their fusion blend, quite marked by the Syrah, with lots of black peppercorn in the finish. This is a lush, approachable red. 8,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in September 2016.

    The prolific Más Que Vinos also produced a 50/50 blend of Cencibel (Tempranillo) and Syrah, the 2013 La Meseta, which comes from organically farmed old vines on limestone-rich soils. It fermented separately in stainless steel vats with malolactic fermentation in cement vats and eight months élevage in new French oak barrels. It feels a little closed and austere with some rusticity, earthy hints and a touch of tree bark with a core of black fruit. The palate also shows some rusticity with dusty tannins and a dry finish. An austere, serious wine that might be better than what is showing today, hence the plus sign on the score. Better with food. 8,000 bottles were filled in September 2015.

    I was quite surprised by the 2010 La Meseta, a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Tempranillo with plenty of balsamic aromas, minty notes, smoky bacon, flowers and the Tempranillo red fruit, perhaps a little anonymous/international but really well done, approachable and hedonistic. This wine is sold mostly in Germany.
