The 2009 Aglianico Fidelis is a tremendous wine for the money. Juicy red berries, flowers, and crushed rocks explode from the glass in this racy, sleek Agliancio. Readers won’t find a ton of varietal character or complexity, but instead a wine built on racy, exuberant fruit. Varietal notes of smoke, incense and game add nuance on the finish, but the 2009 is mostly about overt fruit. This is another terrific choice for near-term drinking. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2017. The 2007 Aglianico del Taburno Fidelis flows across the palate with layers of dark fruit, spices, leather and licorice. It is a surprisingly seamless, round Aglianico (in relative terms) that offers gorgeous balance and plenty of harmony at its level. Varietal typicity takes a little bit of a backseat here, but that is not necessarily a bad thing for a wine that can serve as an entry point for readers who aren't yet familiar with Aglianico. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2015. This is a gorgeous set of wines from Cantina del Taburno that offer remarkable value. The 2006 Aglianico del Taburno Fidelis is an excellent choice for readers who want to explore the qualities of Aglianico, one of southern Italy’s great red varieties. This forward, soft red offers up sweet cherries, smoke, herbs, spices and cured meats in an approachable style, with plenty of varietal character and tons of personality. It is a fabulous effort from Cantina del Taburno, as well as a terrific value. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2016. Cantina del Taburno is an excellent source for well-priced wines from Campania.
