Closed with a glass cork, the unoaked Cusumano 2021 Sicilia Nero d'Avola shows soft dark fruit and black cherry over a medium-weight mouthfeel. This entry-level red is super fresh and lively with cherry, baked plum and toasted cinnamon. The wine is supple and simple to the palate. This is a super production of 696,000 bottles.

The Cusumano 2019 Sicilia Nero d'Avola (with 500,000 bottles released with glass corks) represents fruit from the Tenuta San Giacomo near Butera which has the white calcareous soils that Nero d'Avola loves most. Made only in stainless steel, this is a fresh and primary red wine with simple tones of tart cherry, wet earth, olive and grilled fennel seed. The finish is lightweight and leaner than I remember past editions being.

This wine has become part of the Sicilia DOC since the last time I tasted it. The 2018 Sicilia Nero d'Avola (closed with a glass cork) shows a dark color saturation and a terrific personality. The unoaked wine is bright and thick, with plenty of dark primary fruit to grab your attention. The intensity is there, but the complexity not so much. It hardly matters anyway because this wine is all about freshness and easy-drinking accessibility. I would pair it with my favorite spicy sausage and broccoletti pizza. Production is large at 700,000 bottles made, and you get great value here.

The entry level 2015 Nero d'Avola delivers a terrific presentation and outstanding value for this low price. The wine is crisp and clean with a bright, fruity disposition. It offers dark cherry, tilled earth and crushed pistachio nut. Its easy approach and fresh acidity would pair perfectly with pizza or simple pasta dishes. Some 600,000 bottles are made.

Here's a solid value wine from sunny Sicily. The 2014 Nero d'Avola from the Cusumano brothers is full of great surprises this year and I am very pleased with the results. The 2014 vintage shows a big jump in quality over previous years. Closed with a glass cork, the wine pours out of the bottle to show a saturated and rich appearance. Aromas of dark berry, tobacco leaf, moist earth and olive tapenade are well presented and balanced. Well done.
