Faiveley's 1990 Pommard-Les Chaponnieres, from a vineyard that lacks the prestige of such Pommard vineyards as Epenots and Rugiens, is sensational. A sweet, oaky, plummy, jammy nose jumps from the glass. The saturated color suggests intensity. A full-bodied wine of immense richness, a chewy, almost unctuous texture, and a deep, dramatic, even flamboyant finish, this wine is supple enough to be drunk now, and will continue to provide fascinating drinking over the next decade. While most of the attention is focused on Faiveley's extensive premier cru and grand cru offerings from the Cote de Nuits, this firm does a superlative job in the Cote Chalonnais and the Cote de Beaune. Faiveley produced an unfiltered Pommard Les Chaponnieres. This supple wine has a smoky, toasty, plummy bouquet, with excellent depth and richness. This attractive, fleshy wine should drink well until 1998-2000.
