The 2008 Pomino Rosso is a delicate, somewhat ethereal Pinot-like offering laced with dried cherries, flowers, cinnamon and earthiness. A feminine, soft red, the Pomino Rosso is best enjoyed over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2013. This is a strong set of new releases from the Frescobaldi family, yet as is often the case, I am left thinking these properties have yet to maximize their full potential. Here’s a Tuscan red that’s racy and lean, a pure shot of cherry and cranberry fruit with little else mucking it up. The nose has a hint of tree bark and cola in addition to expressive red fruit, while the palate is all zippy cherries, vanilla and pepper. The 1997 Pomino (a blend of Sangiovese, Merlot, and Pinot Noir) exhibits an evolved medium garnet color as well as scents of dried herbs, red currants, raspberries, and strawberries.
