Now a Sicilia DOC wine, the Tenuta Rapitalà 2018 Sicilia Hugonis is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avola. The wine shows lovely intensity and the robust fruit weight that you should expect of a red wine from the deep south of Italy. The bouquet peels back to pleasant layers of blackberry and prune. Those fruit tones are followed by mild tones of spice, scorched earth and black olive. This release of 6,300 bottles is ready to drink with a thick steak straight off the grill.

This is a blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avola. The 2016 Hugonis is a succulent and softly textured expression with ripe cherry, spice, leather and tar. This is a medium-weight red wine from the deep south of Italy. Drink this pretty wine with grilled sausage with fennel seed.

The 2014 Hugonis is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Nero d'Avola from an excellent vintage in Sicily. This is a darkly saturated wine with bold fruit layers and plenty of dark mulberry, blackberry, leather, spice, black olive and moist chewing tobacco. The wine shows ripeness, but there is careful balance here with bright layers of fruity acidity to brighten up the finish. This wine offers the soft and succulent structure of Cabernet Sauvignon with aromas that recall the warm summer breeze in Sicily that picks up aromas of wild fennel and sea salt. Some 8,000 bottles were made.

The top shelf wine released by Tenuta Rapitalà is the 2013 Hugonis. The wine represents a bold blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avola from the southwest corner of Sicily. This wine is teaming with rich fruit flavors and backing spice. Cola, balsam herb and licorice add to the overall complexity. Hugonis closes with a sweet cherry note and offers thick textural richness.

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avola, the 2012 Hugonis (an IGT Terre Siciliane wine) is a dark and masculine Sicilian red. The bouquet definitely reveals the Cabernet element thanks to tangy aromas of dark fruit followed by grilled herb and wild blackberry. The mouthfeel is thick, chewy and rich. Hugonis shows the warm climate characteristics of southern Mediterranean winemaking. There is a sweet note of jammy cherry and pressed mint at the back. This vintage is bold and perhaps less nuanced compared to previous editions of Hugonis.
