The 2009 Barolo shows the bold and heavier footprint of Serralunga d’Alba, the production zone known for the biggest and most structured expressions of Nebbiolo. Dark, brooding and elegant, the wine presents a full frame and compact composition. It delivers solid notes of red fruit, plum, spice and leather in a swift and confident manner. This wine should drink nicely starting in two or three years. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023. Carvings found on an ancient oak barrel date the winemaking activities of this important estate to 1834. The property once served as a hunting reserve for the first king of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II. More recently, majority shares were sold to Eataly founder, Oscar Farinetti and his business partner. The 100-hectare Fontanafredda property in Serralunga d’Alba is the largest contiguous vineyard in the Langhe today.
