Compared to the 1995, the red 1994 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Classique reveals more spicy, peppery, earthy overtones in its black cherry and raspberry-scented nose. The wine is medium to full-bodied, with excellent richness and depth, considerable spiciness (in contrast to the fruit-dominated 1995), and a tannic, acidic finish. It is a wine to drink now and over the next 12-15 years.I suspect La Nerthe will make even greater wine, but there is no reason to complain about the quality emanating from this, Chateauneuf du Pape's most historical estate, and its only grand chateau.
